It takes concerted efforts to drive development

It is undeniable that the development of ethnic communities has always been an ambitious agenda for the successive governments to implement. Despite this, these areas have lagged far behind in terms of infrastructural development. The key culprit of the ethnic regions remaining underdeveloped for over five decades is largely due to lack of regional stability.
Again, the first democratically elected civilian government is not an exception. It has vowed to pay priority to the development of ethnic communities. This time it seems like a dream come true. The government is expected to realise its development plan in Rakhine State. The region boasts of a great wealth of mineral and forest resources, but these favourable conditions are yet to force the pace of development in the region, given its ethnic diversity.
State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has called for mutual respect and understanding among ethnic communities for the sake of national reconciliation. It is absolutely vital to develop a strong sense of community spirit and foster relations among different regions and states. It is a strong sense of community spirit that will no doubt dissipate racial divisions and bridge the development gap left by the conflict and misunderstanding.
No government is capable of bringing instant affluence to a region with a chant of mantras. Local communities themselves must be ready to lend a helping hand to the government’s development initiatives. It takes concerted efforts to drive development after all.
