Four images of the Hpaung Daw U Pagoda were brought to Nyaung Shwe on Tuesday morning to be displayed to residents.
The elaborately decorated Karaweik barge was towed by 28 traditional boats and over 100 leg-rowers across Inle Lake to Nyaung Shwe.
The images were taken from the barge to a decorated vehicle by Union Minister of Culture U Aye Myint Kyu and Chief Minister of Shan State U Sao Aung Myat.
The grand procession was accompanied by other ministers and Nyaung Shwe Township officials. The images were set up to receive respect and veneration from the township’s residents.
Hpaung Daw U Pagoda is celebrated every year with traditional leg-rowing demonstrations and competitions.
In this year’s leg-rowing competitions, male teams were comprised of 100 or 46 leg-rowers, while female teams had 26 leg-rowers. Individual rowers also competed. The winning teams received awards from the union minister and state chief minister.
The four images of the Hpaung Daw U Pagodaw will remain in Nyaung Shwe from 20 to 22 October. —Nay Myo Thurein
