Historic Taungthaman Bridge set for restoration

Taungthaman LakeeThe 164-year Taungthaman Bridge in Mandalay Region’s Amarapura Township will undergo a K227-million restoration under a plan outlined by the region government on Friday.
The meeting at the hall of the region government in Aungmyethazan Township, attended by officials of the Ministry of Culture, also discussed steps for the conservation of Taungthaman Lake.
Region Minister for Finance Dr Myint Kyu explained the funding for the restoration works, while Assistant Engineer U Aye Lwin of the Archaeology and National Museum Department (Mandalay) outlined technical aspects of the project.
Departmental officials discussed sanitation to improve the lake’s water quality, including measure to prevent sewage inflows, as well as security measures for the bridge.
The bridge overhaul will involve the replacement of roughly 100 posts and beams, installation of wooden railings, and repairs to damaged posts and power lines.
