Historian Dr Thant Myint-U wins Fukuoka Grand Prize

AAA_0088(2) MyintHistorian and Yangon heritage champion Dr Thant Myint-U on Sunday received the grand prize of Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize from Mr Soichiro Takashima, Mayor of Fukuoka City, Japan.
Fukuoka Prize is an award established by the city of Fukuoka and the Yokatopia Foundation to honor the outstanding achievements by individuals or organizations in preserving and creating unique and diverse cultures of Asia.
According to a post on Fukuoka website, Dr. Thant Myint-U is a truly worthy recipient of the Grand Prize of the Fukuoka Prize as he is a distinguished intellectual of 21st century Asia, narrating the voices of the people of Myanmar and connecting them with the wider international community.
Dr. Thant Myint-U is the grandson of former UN Secretary-General U Thant. He was born in 1966 in New York City. After graduating from Harvard University, he enrolled at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, from which he received a Master’s Degree in International Relations and International Economics. In 1996, he received his Ph.D. in Modern History from the University of Cambridge.
Present at the prize award ceremony at ParkRoyal Hotel in Yangon were Union Minister at the President Office U Soe Thane, Yangon Mayor U Hla Myint, ambassadors from the foreign embassies and officials.
