DEPARTMENTAL officials from aviation department and related ministries recently discussed the implementation of the construction of a new airport in MraukU, a little known archaeological site of Rakhine State.
At a meeting on 15 January in Rakhine State, participants mainly discussed the designated location to construct a runway, settlement of land compensation to locals within the project area and the collection of local-made products to fulfil the project needs.
Under the project, a 6,000 foot long and 100 foot wide runway to take ATR 72 aircrafts will be constructed for the first phase, a 8,500 foot long and 100 foot wide runway for Boeing 737-400 aircrafts to take off for the second phase and a runway for aircraft weighing 800,000 pounds to take off.
The target area for the project is located beside the Sittway-Yangon highway, 6 miles from the eastern part of MraukU Township.
An old airport is already situated in the southern part of the township.
