WATER from an illegal gold mine in Bhamauk Township, Sagaing Region, has polluted the Maezar River.
The spill flowed into tributaries of the Maezar River, on which local people and cattle rely for drinking and household use.
The river has turned yellow, said U Thein, a resident of Wahphyutaungvillage.
“The pollution level of the river is increasing day by day. The current is changing as well due to the sediment,” said a villager from Simaw village.
Local people are also experiencing a shortage of grazing land, as businessmen have bought local farmland at high prices from landowners in order to set up gold mines.—Maung Chit Lin
