FRANCE will finance US$ 1 million for the conducting of a feasibility study on a hydropower project in the town of Laymyo, Rakhine State, according to the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.
Union Minister for Electricity and Energy U Pe Zin Tun met French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Mr Jean-Marc Ayrault yesterday to discuss ways to meet the country’s power demand, including the construction of the 690-megawatt hydropower project. According to the ministry’s Permanent Secretary U Htein Lwin, 34 per cent of the country’s population consumes electricity. “We are working hard to ensure that the whole country has access to electricity in 2030,” he said, adding that the Shweli-3 hydropower project in northern Shan State with the capacity to generate 1,050 megawatts of electricity is 10 per cent complete. “The project is being undertaken on our own budget but we have financial constraints. If we can get financial assistance from France, the project can easily be accomplished,” he said.
