An Earthquake Forum organised by the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and the Government of Mandalay Region was held in the Pyinaydazaung hall of Education College in Chanayethazan township, Mandalay on 22 October.
Present at the event were Mandalay Region Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, members of Mandalay Region Government, Hluttaw Representatives, the Director-General and officials of the Relief and Resettlement Department, the secretary and committee members of Myanmar Earthquake Committee, chairman and executive members of Mandalay Engineering Society, officials from the Meteorology and Hydrology Department, the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development, the Department of Construction, Myanmar Fire Services Department and Myanmar Red Cross Society.
At the forum, Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung gave the opening speech, and the director-general of Relief and Resettlement Department explained the purpose of the forum. The Regional Representative of the European Union spoke words of greeting. The secretary of the Myanmar Earthquake Committee talked about the probability of the occurrence of earthquakes, an official of the Myanmar Engineering Society explained an evaluation of the probability occurrence of an earthquake in Mandalay, an official of Mandalay Region Health Department gave an evaluation of capabilities to provide medical treatment to victims after earthquake, and an official of UNOCH explained the preparedness of Mandalay for the risks of an earthquake. Officials then responded to queries from attendees.
At the classrooms of the Education College, officials held discussions on matters related to the ways to promote public awareness of earthquakes, earthquake preparedness and immediate response, and transportation of patients after an earthquake and administering medical treatment and rehabilitation measures after an earthquake. The Regional Chief Minister and officials approved future plans submitted by the Relief and Resettlement Department. The Region Chief Minister and officials noted the relief aids displayed at the event by the Myanmar Fire Services Department and Myanmar Red Cross Society and the Relief and Resettlement Department. —Thiha Ko Ko (Mandalay)
