Five migrant workers fall to their deaths

FIVE migrant workers died after falling off the edge of a mountain while digging jade stones in Hpakant yesterday. The incident came after one man was confirmed dead and one missing following a landslide in Hpakant on Monday.
The five victims have been confirmed as Aung Kyaw Soe Khaing, 24; Zaw Naung, 24; Naw Maing, 20; Tan Guam, 26; and Za Tann Daung Khaung, 39, according to local authorities.
The incident happened around 8:45pm on Tuesday.
The bodies of the men were sent to a nearby hospital.
In late November last year, a deadly landslide at the site left 115 migrant workers dead.
Failures to follow safety regulations by both mining companies and migrant squatters have posed challenges for local authorities in preventing landslides around jade mines in Kachin State.
To prevent landslides, local authorities have suggested that migrant miners squatting in at-risk areas relocate to safer areas and that mining companies dump their waste soil in accordance with technical safety rules.
