The fisheries department is planning to take legal action against vendors who are selling illegal imported fish through border gates in the local market, according to a report in the Myawady Daily yesterday.
The department has urged the public to cooperate by giving information to deter the illegal fish imports.
“We have asked the government to allow us to inspect some places in the Yangon region which are used to smuggle fish into the country. The government has also already permitted. But we have to make sure to get the information from the public. If not, we will not be able to do anything,” said U Tun Win Myint, the head of Yangon Region Fisheries Department.
Most of the smuggled fishes are entering into the country through Thai border gate, which is creating a negative impact on the local fish breeding industry.
The department took legal action against smugglers after the local fish breeders informed us in March, he added.
