Disaster preparedness workshop focuses on landslide dams

A WORKSHOP on disaster preparedness took place in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday; the event began with an address by Union Minister for Environmental Conservation and Forestry U Win Tun.
The union minister cited weather records stating that the country has seen an increase in the number of disasters, stressing the recent landslides and floods in some parts of the country.
Kalay township in Sagaing Region and Haka township in Chin State were the worst-hit by the disaster four months ago.The workshop focused on how to deal with landslide dams and prevent their possible impact on surrounding areas. The union minister called for experts to coordinate approaches to disaster risk reduction.
The workshop drew rectors, environmentalists, departmental officials and interest groups.–Myanmar News Agency
