Onion nurseries in Monywa Township, Sagaing Region were destroyed by torrential rain last month, causing the price of seeds to rise, said onion growers.
This year, onions were fetching a high price and so, the acreage of onions increased. But torrential rain poured down while the onion nurseries were being prepared, hiking the price up to Ks100,000 per small basket (similar to the contents of eight condensed milk cans).
Some damaged nursery beds have been saved, but other onion beds remain unprepared for planting, said an onion grower from the Sagaing Region.—Win Oo (Zayar Tine)
