Community-based disaster preparedness essential for saving lives

Every village and ward should have community-based disaster preparedness plans in place, as they are the most effective means of minimizing damage when catastrophe strikes.
A CBDP outlines how to effectively cope with a natural disaster before, during and after it. It may include evacuation routes and list essential supplies. A proper CBDP equips local people with the knowledge to reduce the impact of natural disasters.
When local people are properly prepared for disaster, they can evacuate to safety without waiting for outside help. In times of danger, it is sometimes very difficult to help others. It is therefore in the best interests of local people to be able to move to designated safe places by themselves.
With many parts of the country currently reeling from flooding caused by torrential rains, it is more important than ever that villages and wards have proper disaster planning in place.
