Clashes in Kachin State raise concerns ahead of election

DSCF5864Armed clashes in Kachin State not only threaten peace talks but also the 2015 general election, said Dr Tu Ja, Chairman of Kachin State Democracy Party (KDP) on 28 July.
Nshang San Awng from the Myitkyina-based Peace-talk Creation Group (PCG) on 27 July said some fighting broke out in Sumprabum Township between Myitkyina and Putao townships in July. Local residents without access to Sumprabum’s urban area fled to the area controlled by the Kachin Independence Army.
For security reasons, the Union Election Commission cancelled the 2012 by-election in Kachin State’s Mogaung, Phakant and Bhamo townships three days before the scheduled polling day.
