Centenarians receive honours at ceremony

Nay Pyi Taw, 24 Aug—Vice President Dr Sai Mauk Kham attended a ceremony Monday to provide cash assistance to centenarians at the city hall in Lashio, northern Shan State.
The vice president and his wife together with attendees paid respects to a number of senior citizens, including those aged 100 and above.
On behalf of the president, Vice President Dr Sai Mauk Kham presented certificates of honour and K200,000 each to Daw Hnai Lwe Lein, aged 111, from Tangyan Township, Daw Dong Yang, 105, Daw Nai Sa, 102, and Daw Saw May, 100, all from Lashio, and U Sam Mu, 100, from Hsipaw.
Vice President Dr Sai Mauk Kham and wife Daw Nan Shwe Hmon gave K100,000 each to the older persons.
Daw Phyu Phyu Nyunt, wife of the chief minister of Shan State, also presented K100,000 each to the centenarians.
A total of 17 senior citizens in northern Shan State received K6.8 million at the ceremony.
The programme to honour the senior citizens is the first of its kind in Myanmar since independence. According to the social welfare national strategic plan, certificates of honour and K200,000 each provided by the president will be given to 603 older persons of above 100 years old across the nation.—MNA
