Information Union Minister Dr Pe Myint met the film censorship board in Yangon yesterday to find out solutions to the challenges and complaints in their work, urging the censors to raise their voices.
Dr Pe Myint described the call for freedom of expression as the nature of political reform, stressing that they need to take into account the cultural context in exercising their rights granted in the existing censorship law.
“As time passes, so do perspectives. We must consider the values and norms of the society in deciding to censor what is contrary to our tradition and culture,” he said. The union minister urged the censorship board to try to understand their rights and follow the 1996 censorship law to the letter.
The union minister pointed out the need for relaxations in censorship, calling for concerted efforts to enact a new law. —Yi Yi Myint and Ohnmar Thant
