Call for Speakers’ Corner relocation rejected at Amyotha Hluttaw

P1Nay Pyi Taw, 24 July — A call from Yangon constituency MP U Phone Myint Aung for relocation of the Speakers’ Corner from the west corner of the Kyaikkasan Ground in the country’s largest city to a more suitable place was turned down Friday in the Amyotha Hluttaw.
It would be impossible to move the public site to another place, U Kyaw Kyaw Win, Deputy Minister at President’s Office, responded, explaining that the area is set up in the township of Tamwe for peaceful parades, assemblies and public speaking in accordance with the law.
Before the establishment of the Speakers’ Corner, protests occurred near Sule Pagoda or at Mahabandoola Park or other central locations, causing traffic congestion, he added. The Amyotha Hluttaw agreed to discuss the monogamy bill, the Pyithu Hluttaw amendment bill and the organ donation bill. MNA
