Brick making factories in rural areas is damaging the soil and resulting in its degradation, according to a survey in Nyaung-U.
Locals in Shwepyitha Village in Nyaung-U Township have said that a number of toddy palm trees died and are putting the blame on nearby brick making businesses, said Kyaw Kyaw, a local correspondent of the state-run Myanma Alinn on Friday.
Around a hundred farmers in Shwepyitha Village have suffered hardships due to soil degradation and the loss of palm trees on which they rely for a livelihood by producing toddy palm liquid and jam.
The loss of livelihoods has caused some locals to migrate to urban areas in search of work.
They called on the local authorities to take necessary measures to conserve the natural environment.
