Authorities seized ownerless illegal logs in Katha, Sagaing Region, on 1 December, police reported yesterday.
A combined investigation team comprising officers from the Ministry of Forestry and the Myanmar Police Force discovered about 54 tonnes of logs, which are believed to have been hidden in the Shweli River at Hlawkasin Jetty.
According to police, smugglers cut trees from the Kananme Forest Reserve and submerged them at the jetty, threatening watercrafts on the river.
Illegal gold mining on the banks of the Shweli River has caused deforestation in the area and gas lead to the formation of sandbanks in the river. Teak trees in the area are threatened by deforestation due to illegal cutting by smugglers.
