THE 13th Conference of the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information took place in the Philippines from 15 to 17 March in conjunction with the 14th ASEAN Information Senior Officials Meeting and related meetings.
At the opening ceremony of the 13th meeting in Cebu yesterday, Information Union Minister U Ye Htut, who served as chairman of the 12th ASEAN Information Ministers Meeting, handed over the chairmanship to Philippine Information Minister Mr Herminio B Coloma, who chaired yesterday’s meeting.
The meeting focused on closer cooperation in implementation of information strategies in the region, action plans for media development through collaborative efforts and training for media-related industries.
Also on the agenda were programmes to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the association in its member countries and measures to enhance its role. The 13th Conference of the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information concluded with a release of a joint statement. At another meeting between the Southeast Asian bloc and three partners—China, Japan and South Korea—the latter countries pledged their continued assistance to greater cooperation in media development and greater support for campaigns aimed at raising public awareness in the bloc.
The first meeting between the ASEAN ministers and Japan’s information minister was held in Cebu from 15 to 16 March.
