Almost 5,000 villages in Sagaing go on the grid

A TOTAL of 4,717 villages in Sagaing Region now have access to electricity, using a variety of different technology.
The union and regional governments provided electric cables to 1,185 villages, generators to1,851 villages, hydro-electric power to 204 villages, biogas and paddy husk burning fuel to 171 villages and solar energy to1,306 villages.
Sagaing Region has a total of 6,006 villages.
Solar panels were previously provided to the region’s remote villages, with half of the total funding being provided by the regional government and the other half, from residents.  During the 2012-13 fiscal year, 5,157 households in 82 villages received solar panels at a total cost of K150 million (US$177,233). In the 2013-14 fiscal year, 15,010 households on 295 villages received solar panels at a cost of K422 million ($326,000).
In the 2014-2015 fiscal year, 17,069 households in 398 villages received panels at a cost of K419 million ($324,000).
