6th ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) + 8 Gems & Jewelry President’s Summit

An opening ceremony of 6th ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) + 8 Gems & Jewelry President’s Summit was held yesterday at Myanmar International Convention Centre 2 (MICC-2). The summit was organised by Myanmar Gems and Jewelry Entrepreneurs Association.
The event was started with playing of the Myanmar national and ASEAN anthems after which Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, U Ohn Win said today’s summit is held for ASEAN countries to cooperate in gems and jewelry sector and increase trade and promote production sector. Furthermore, to make ASEAN a single market and a production base area, capacity of export/import businesses in the region are to be raised and clear, simple and similar norms and technical rules and regulations that are in line with business negotiations and new implementing mechanism need to be developed. The Union Minister also added that the summit is held to develop a main pillar of AEC Single Market through cooperation for mutual benefit of production and trading businesses. Conduct of gems and jewelry businesses need to be beneficial as it is one of the sectors that support the nation’s aim of increasing export. The ministry is conducting as its future works, cooperation for mutual benefit between government and local and foreign businesses in the mineral mining business, reviewing the market situation, increase export volume and develop the whole process of gems and jewelry trading. Next, Union Minister for Commerce, Dr. Than Myint said one of the 12 Economic Policy of the Union of Myanmar is identifying the changing and developing business environment both in ASEAN and beyond, so as to enable our own businesses to situate themselves to take advantage of potential opportunities and therefore wishes for Myanmar gems and jewelry to obtain not only local and ASEAN region market but also markets in other related countries as well.
The Union Minister for Commerce also approved and compliment Myanmar Gems and Jewelry Entrepreneurs Association’s active cooperation with related ministries to obtain tax revenue for the nation and proper prices in sales of gems and jewelry. He also invited businesses from ASEAN and other countries attending the Summit to invest in Myanmar and work for mutual benefit.
Afterward, Myanmar Gems and Jewelry Entrepreneurs Association Chairman U Yone Mu told of his belief on the development of a gem and jewelry market through increased cooperation and relation among ASEAN countries and other related countries, gems and jewelry associations and businesses. Furthermore a better future for ASEAN and related countries’ gems and jewelry market sector can be formulated through sharing of technical knowledge and discussing for increasing trade.
A video of gems producing area in Myanmar, status of gems mining and gems emporium held were then shown.
Next, Yangon Region gems and jewelry association vice chairman Dr. Aung Kyaw Win explained about preparations made for 6th AEC + 8 Gems & Jewelry President’s Summit after which the union ministers, officials, representative and officials of ASEAN countries and related countries, guests took a commemorative group photo.
Chairmen and officials of gems and jewelry associations of ASEAN countries and related countries then signed an agreement on cooperation in gems and jewelry sector and technical transfer. Myanmar Gems and Jewelry Entrepreneurs Association had opened sales booth of Myanmar gems and jewelry in the ground floor of MICC-2 for visiting local and foreign guests.
The first, second and third ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) + 8 Gems & Jewelry President’s Summit were held in Thailand, fourth in Malaysia, fifth in Viet Nam and the present sixth is being held in Myanmar. The seventh AEC+8 Gems & Jewelry President’s Summit will be held in Shanghai, China, it is learnt.
