The 55th anniversary of the Seven July memorial was held yesterday at the tomb of Boh Aung Kyaw, on the grounds of the former Rangoon University Student Union building.
Present at the ceremony were All-Burma Federation of Student Unions, Basic Education Students’ Union, the 74 Student Union and other political organisations, it was learnt.
At the ceremony, the ABFSU issued a declaration of objection of efforts to rebuild the new student union building at the site of the former student union, without official recognition of forming student unions freely and allowing them to perform activities, in an attempt to improve the image of former military dictators responsible for atrocities.
In 1962, students staged a protest against the military coup of General Ne Win, who then ordered a brutal suppression of the demonstration that resulted in numerous deaths and thousands of arrests. The next morning, the military junta blew up the Rangoon University Student Union building with dynamite. The day was designated as Seven July.
