The 47-member State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee held its plenary session at the Wizaya Dhamma Hall on the Kaba Aye Hill yesterday, attracting its Chairman Sayadaw Dr Bhaddanta Kumarabhivamsa and Union Minister for Religious and Cultural Affairs Thura U Aung Ko.
The Chairman Sayadaw urged the member Sayadaws of three groups to voice constructive criticism of each other’s unconventional decisions but cautioned that the frequent correction of bad decisions would lose respect and trust from the Sangha community.
The Sayadaw called for deep contemplation and critical evaluation of a problem from different angles in making a decision, stressing that care should be taken that the decisions for religious issues comply with the existing civil laws and the Buddhist laws called Dhamma Vinaya.
“We must take into consideration the existing civil laws and the Dhamma Vinaya (religious discipline),” the Sayadaw said.
Union Minister Thura U Aung Ko, in his briefing to the members of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, said that some young monks and novices were found to engage in conduct which is grossly indecent.
He urged the Sayadaws to decisively deal with the issue in a bid to promote Theravada Buddhism, describing the public use of social media as a platform for the ignition of religious and racial tensions.
He also pointed out the need to prevent any scheme designed to orchestrate the collapse of the Sangha community, calling for combined efforts to ensure the promotion and propagation of Buddhism.
